Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT)

Overview

In most cases, Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) must be paid at the time that a vehicle is registered in the State.

When a vehicle is registered, a registration number is issued at the same time.

The following pages describe how to register a vehicle and pay VRT.

Note

From 20 May 2024, electric bikes that can go faster than 25km/hr or have a power output greater than 250W, and those that can operate without pedalling, will be classified as e-mopeds. E-mopeds will be classified as mechanically propelled vehicles and will require registration with Revenue.

The same registration requirements that currently exist for other vehicles will apply for e-mopeds. Motor vehicles must be registered within 30 days of their date of entry into the State, except when held by an authorised trader.

For further details on e-mopeds, please see gov.ie.
